The public is being urged to help catch those responsible for dumping hazardous asbestos around the Angus countryside.
The appeal comes from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) after a spate of incidents in which asbestos sheeting was fly-tipped on the outskirts of Montrose over a three week period.
More than a tonne of asbestos, which is harmful to human health, has been dumped at various locations including the Rosemont Estate, Hillside, Kirkton of Craig and outside the Montrose Recycling Centre from 17 October to 9 November.
Heather Bowman, Environmental Protection Officer with SEPA said: “We are treating this matter very seriously. Not only is the clear up operation costly and time consuming for Angus Council, but there are health implications too, asbestos sheeting could cause harm to people if it is broken up.
“This type of asbestos is commonly used as a roofing material for domestic garages and commercial buildings. We would remind anyone arranging disposal of such material that they have a legal duty to ensure that the contractor is a registered waste carrier and that they are disposing of the material to a licensed site.”
SEPA is appealing for anyone with relevant information about the incidents to call the Dump Dumpers Stopline on 0845 230 4090 or the SEPA emergency number on 0800 80 70 60.
